Justice Bobde to be Sworn-In as the 47th Chief Justice Of India

As Justice Ranjan Gogoi retired on 17th November, Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde will be sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India on 18th November by President Ram Nath Kovind who will administer him the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Crux of the Matter
  • Justice SA Bobde, born in Nagpur and graduated from SFS College Nagpur and studied Law at Dr Ambedkar Law College, Nagpur University, in 1978.
  • He is known for standing up for the cause of farmers for years by fighting their cases in higher courts.
  • Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde is the fourth judge from Maharashtra to become the Cheif Justice of India and has been part of historical judgements including recently concluded Ayodhya issue and Right to Privacy case in Aadhar.
  • Justice Gogoi was known for taking hard and sometimes surprising decisions. He was sworn in on October 3, 2018, as the 46th CJI and had the tenure of 13 months.
  • Justice SA Bobde will remain in office till 23 April 2021.

The Chief Justice of India (CJI) is the head of the judiciary of India and the Supreme Court of India. The CJI also heads their administrative functions.
