Crux of the Matter

What Is Movember?
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide.

Established as an NGO in 2003, Movember raised a great amount of funding for raising awareness for men’s health through donations and selling merchs. 

What Is NSN?

  • No Shave November (NSN) is an idea similar to movember but it is not limited to men or moustaches. The idea of NSN is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose.
  • NSN encourages its participants to donate the money they typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle. 
  • An average person spends somewhere between $5-100 behind shaving, waxing and grooming in a month. 
  • The idea was turned into a charity in 2009 but till today, many people treat it as a social media trend without knowing its true meaning. 
  • Many brands like Pringles, KFC, Syska, etc. and celebrities over the years have endorsed No-Shave November or Movember.

Other Such Social Media Trends

#nomakeupselfie

  • This UK-based selfie challenge rose to prominence in 2014 for the cause of Cancer research. It dared women to go out without makeup and post pictures on Instagram.
  • It started out as an effort to raise money for cancer research but quickly turned into a phenomenon of self-expression and liberating many women from the notions of modern beauty ideals – high-profile activist celebrities, such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Beyoncé joined and as much as 8 million pounds were raised.

Trashtag Challenge

  • It is a challenge where people clean up a heavily littered area, posting before and after photos with the hashtag #trashtag
  • It rose to prominence in countries like US, Mexico, India and China as well as being replicated in other languages such as “#basurachallenge” for Spanish.

Icebucket Challenge

  • Started by Anthony Senerchia in 2014, this challenge raises awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease and encourages donations to research.
  • Celebrities like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Oprah Winfrey took part in this challenge and raised as much as $115 million for the cause.
